Statement of intent
My chosen theme for my GCSE main project is going to be around landscape and I am going to look at different types of landscapes, such as lakes, trees. miniature landscapes and possibly even my own local landscapes. I have chosen to do this theme because it gives me different varieties of landscapes and i can do more stuff with them.
Surrounded by different landscapes, I can look at different ones and experiment with different landscapes as well. Open brief that will allow me to try out lots of different techniques.
In order to produce a successful, creative and individual project final main project, I need to start by doing some in-depth research around my chosen theme. The way I am going to do this is by making sure I have good, detailed research and look at different photographers that have the same of similar theme as me so I can maybe get some more ideas and inspiration. I could also look at magazines and books to get more inspiration, create some mood boards, mindmaps. Also, I can create some pinterests boards.
I hope to explore lots of different options so that i build up intricate understanding of my chosen theme. I need to have a wide range of research using a variety of different medias, to unsure that my project is well informed and in-depth. This will allow me to create a successful project and will help to inspire me. My main aim is to create a project that is very personal to me and one where I can explore and develop my photography techniques and skills.
I am going to use my weebly personal photography website to record all of my ideas.
I intend to capture a wide range of different shoots for this project. In year 10 we went to lake district and focused on capturing the natural landscape, focusing on the autumn colours and soft light.
Studio shoots that explores texture in the landscapes (bark, moss, lichen), go to my area and document the landscapes around me. I could do fantasy landscapes, photoshop, miniature landscapes. I could use my portrait techniques and skills to create my own little fantasy world. I could also create collage landscapes.
Throughout my project, I intend to use as many processes and techniques as possible to gain a high quality project. When I am using my camera I will leave it on the manual setting so that I can change/control the images I am taking. If I am taking photos outside, I will have to constantly check my IOS, white balance, shutter speed and aperture. When using photoshop I can use a variety of tools such as layers, text, opacity tool, saturation, sharpener and blur tool.
Photoshop
Aperture
White balance
Rule of thirds (composition)
Depth of field.
When I am using photoshop, I hope to use layers, opacity, brush tools, dodge and burn, saturation, sharpener, blur tool and spot healing tool. I could also use my mobile phone to extend my knowledge further and manipulate images using snapseed and lensflare
By doing this project, I hope to learn more about the theme of landscapes but also how to take my work on a journey and create a really personal and meaningful project. In order to do this I am going to complete my research and try to experiment with different tools in order to create a final gallery of images.
Mindmap to show the start of my ideas
Photography research- Martin Lawrence
Context:
Martin Lawrence is a photographer who first used to do sketches of birds in his garden which he was not good at so his parents then decided to give him a small camera for his birthday and they thought that maybe he can try to take photos instead. He founds this more successful and gradually progressed from a small camera to a Pentax Program A. "I left school, joined the Civil Service as a clerk and lost interest in photography when I switched to golf where I became quite successful reducing my handicap to 3. After a few years, whilst still in the Civil Service, I joined the IT department ending up as a Senior Programmer. I didn't enjoy the work though really, I much preferred to be out in the open air than inside in a stuffy office". When he met his wife that's when he became interested in photography again and soon purchased his first own digital camera and his small business in photography slowly started to grow. He also left his job in IT to become a professional photographer which then became successful.
Composition:
When I am looking at this photography by Martin Lawrence of the lake district, I can clearly see that he has used the rule of thirds. This is because the mountains in the top have third and the water and shoreline fill the rest of the image. The impacts from using this composition technique is that it will make you focus on the whole image and see the work the photographer has put into it. Also it makes you focus on the little details.
In my opinion, I think that Martin Lawrence has used some strong leading lines in this image that helps create a strong composition. All the lines lead to a central point (vanishing point) sweet spot. I think that the photographer has chosen a very still day to go out and take this photography. He has captured the reflection perfectly, the reflection is a mirror image of the landscape. The impacts of the reflection is that it makes everything go well together and it stands out and catches the eye. It also creates a pattern, with the symmetrical shapes, which adds interest to the photograph.
Connection:
When I look at the image I think the colours are quite soft and there is no harsh lighting. This makes me think that the photographer took this image late afternoon as there is a slight golden tint to the image. The time of the year is summer because you can tell by the sky and the clear reflection in the water. Also because of the colours in the image, like there’s no grey or like wintery colours. The impact is that he captured a beautiful landscape in soft colour with the green contrasting against the blues. There is another vanishing point in this photography which is behind the tree and goes between the mountains and gives the image some sort of depth. Thinking about how the photographer would’ve taken this image, I think he would have had a really good lens on his camera that allowed him to capture the whole landscape in sharp focus, possibly a telescopic lens. I can also see that the image was taken from the photographer's eye level and possibly had to stand in the water when taking the image. The eye level makes it more effective because you can see it from the photographer’s point of view. In this image there is a foreground, which is the water (pebbles) midground is the whitehouse of the picture , distance in the mountains. The white house in the middle stands out because the colours on the house (white, red and grey) are in contrast to the soft greens and blues. The trees in this photography play an important part in the framing and composition of the image. There is a large tree with a strong shape on the left hand side and in one third of the picture. This helps to frame the picture. There is also a tree in the middle and a tree on the right hand side.
Comment:
Overall, I actually like the image because I like how the colours contrast with everything and the photographer probably had to put a lot of thought into it to make sure that he goes on the right day so he can capture the right shots. Also I like the way everything stands out. I could use this image to help inspire me because I am also doing landscapes from the Lake District.

In my opinion, I think that Martin Lawrence has created a strong composition, which helps makes the image look more clear. Also the photographer has used vanishing lines to create a sweet spot and has captured the reflection perfectly, which makes it a mirrored reflection. The reflection makes the image look more clearer and stand out more. Also it makes all the colours contrast well together and it catches the eye. The photographer has chosen a very still day to go out and capture this photography. When I am looking at this image I think there is a quite harsh lighting and it makes me think that the photographer took this photo in the afternoon, as you can tell from the types of colour that are in this image. The time of the year looks like it was taken in spring as you can see the colour of the leaves and the sky. You can also tell it was taken on a cold day because of the sky and also the colours contrast very well with each other.
Connection:
In this image, there is a foreground which is the water, which also has grass in it, the midground which is where the tree in the middle of the lake is and also you can see the trees and the mountains in the distance. Research for Daniel Coyle
Context:
Daniel Coyle’s photography was founded by leading head photographer Daniel Coyle over 8 years ago. Within that time Daniel Coyle’s photography has become one of the most talked about wedding photographers by brides in New York city and destinations all over the world. Daniel Coyle’s photography will capture all the emotions, feelings, actions, details and events. His photography consists of three principle photographers and one associate photographer and he also owns a studio where he is the head photographer.
Composition:
In my opinion, I think that Coyle has created a strong composition which makes everything stand out a lot more. He has also used the rule of thirds and you can see that because of where the sea is and then where the land is which makes it look proportioned properly. I think the photographer has chosen a perfect day to go out and take this photography which also impacts the image because he has captured the reflection perfectly. The photographer has also taken this image at eye level and this also has an impact on the image because it makes the rule of thirds as well. I think that he has used a quick fstop because the image is clear and it’s in focus properly. The main colours used in this image are purple, pink and a little bit of blue and he has edited it on photoshop to create those colours and added different filters to it. There is a foreground which is the bridge and this makes the image look better because the bridge is what catches your eye first and then it makes you focus on the rest of the image. The photographer also could’ve used a tripod to make sure he captures the right moment.
Connection:
What I like about this image is the colours that have been used because I think they all go really well together and they all kind of blend in with each other. I also think that the lighting was quite soft because you can see how the colours all just flow together and blend in with everything. It looks like he took this image around the evening time when the sun was setting because you can see that the sky is like sunset colours. There is an eye level on this image which is where the bridge is and this makes the image look more effective because we can also see it from the photographers point of view and it makes you see everything more clearer in the background.
Comment:
Overall, I like the image because the photographer has been thoughtful about taking the image and had to plan out the time he takes it and everything so he can capture the right moment. Also I really like the colours that he has used because they all go really well together and flow throughout the whole image.

Using photoshop to start to develop my ideas

Developing my ideas further
Last year in October I went to Coniston, Lake District. I took pictures for my ‘Landscape’ project. I had a schedule that I had to follow and I took a variety of photos including pictures of Landscapes, animals, trees, rivers, ponds, roads, shops, berries, lakes and I also went on a boat and took some pictures of the water. We were trying to capture nature in Landscape because it was eye-catching, there was a lot to build up the photos on photoshop and it was interesting. Doing this helped to build up my website because I had a wider range of images to choose from when it came to using photoshop and it then built up their weebly.
Some photographers we researched was Martin Lawrence and some other photographers. We researched these photographers because they all have the similar aspects to our pictures and theme. I can also watch lots of tutorials to develop my ideas and get more inspiration.I can even create boards on pinterest to help me with my final outcomes and inspire me.
My next steps are to go out and take more pictures. I would like to take pictures of like rivers and bridges. This is because I think it goes well with my theme and I want to do something with water. I can also take pictures of like ponds and puddle and raindrops. I want to use these on photoshop and experiment with them because I want to see what kind of mood I can create with them.

To create this outcome I have used different tools such as the black & white filter, lens flare, brightness and curves. These tools allowed me to experiment with different things and the lens flare tool let me position the lighting and make it how bright I want to. The curves tool let me decide how dark or bright I wanted the image to be and I made it a little bit lighter. Finally, the brightness tool let me decide how bright I wanted each colours to be.

Ideas for my final plan
For my final outcomes I have been using photopea and experimenting with different tools and watching lots of different tutorials. I mostly enjoyed doing the layered ones because I feel like they were quite easy and I could experiment with different types. I also liked the black and white one because it worked well for me and I used different tools such as brightness, vibrance, saturation and etc. On photoshop I have also been experimenting a lot with texts and trying to do different things with them. I found them quite easy because I watched tutorials but some of them were quite hard because they didn't turn out how I liked them and some of them went wrong. To develop my outcomes I will watch more tutorials and try and do more text ones because I enjoyed them ones more and use lots of different tools. I also want to try and create some posters with texts and abstract colours as my final outcomes.

To create this final outcome, first I had to put different filters on my image to make it a different colour and to make it looks more bright and vibrant. Then I went onto google and got a lake district poster and then I had to cut out the image that was in the middle of the poster then drag my own image into the middle.

Evaluation
My chosen theme for this project was landscapes and adding text and trying to develop my photos into posters. To make the posters, I had to add texture to my images so I was just trying to experiment with different tools. I thought this was a good theme because it was quite different but at the same time I also feel like I could've developed my outcomes more better and to a higher standard. Something else I also enjoyed was going out to the lake district to take different photos. I thought this was quite good because it allowed me to go to different locations and explore different places to capture my photos. We also went during the autumn time so this meant that there were more colours to see and we also went at different times of the day which was also good because it let me capture different lights.
The part of my project I enjoyed the most was going out to take my pictures and travelling to different places. This was because it allowed me to be more creative and to capture lots of different colours and texture in my pictures. We also took pictures at different times of the day and this was good because I was able to capture different lights and see it at different times of the day. I also enjoyed using photoshop because this allowed me to be more creative and look at different tools.
By using photoshop this allowed me to use lots of different tools and experiment with them. At the start I didn't feel confident at all using photoshop and I only knew how to do the basic things such as adding filters and colour. By watching lots of different tutorials, this made me more confident with using photoshop because I finally knew what I was doing and this let me use lots of different new tools. I also feel confident with adding text because before I didn't know how to deo this before at all. By taking pictures and going out, this allowed me to learn how to take pictures from lots of different angles and experiment with different settings on the camera such as the shutter speed, exposure, aperture, ISO, f-stop and etc.
Some techniques that I would like to develop further is being more confident in using photoshop and using more tools. This is because I always use tutorials to photoshop my images and by doing this I can only use a limited amount of tools. I also want to develop my photos more and tried to make them more complex.
A photographer I have researched during this project was Martin Lawrence. This influenced my work because his theme was pretty similar to mine by taking pictures of the lakes and using similar filters and colours and etc.

I also enjoyed photopea because I liked adding the different layers and filters on my photos.
Some problems I encountered during my project was working from home and mainly covid. By working from home I found this more difficult because it wasn't the same but it also allowed me to be more independent. This also let me use different websites and apps to develop my photos. Also we couldn't really go to any places and this had an impact because we couldn't go out and take more photos for the project. Working from home did make me a bit slow when trying to create my final outcomes.
If I was given the chance to complete this project again, something different I would do is choose a different theme and not posters. This is because I feel like they were quite basic and simple and at first I wasn't really happy with any of my outcomes but then I managed to develop them a bit more.
